Chick-rock rocks.

I have to admit, I love me some girl-led bands–and I’m not afraid to say it.
Not some lame-o like Celine Deon or Wilson Philips, or even Enya, I’m talking indie and punk rock. **Note** there’s nothing wrong with the aforementioned bands, just not my cup-o-tea. Also, I had a buddy in high school who would specifically avoid bands with female leads–that’s just absurd.
I first happened upon this in ‘96. At a Dropkick Murphys show, The Distillers opened-up and blew me away. Oh wait, dang, no they were SUPPOSED to blow me away, but we were treated to Chicago’s-finest in The Dwarves…not quite so awesome.
I immediately loved every track that Brody and the boys laid down, and my love grew from there.
I then got into Sleater-Kinney, and have deeply regretted missing their last show @ 9:30 a few years ago. I went to the show, but they had to cancel due to the A/C catching fire, then I couldn’t make the make-up.
During my time as an avid SK fan, I happened upon a NASCAR race in Richmond and wore one of their t-shirts to said race. A good buddy of mine claimed I was the only person ever to wear a Sleater-Kinney shirt to a NASCAR race. I think he was right.
I then got into Be Your Own Pet. I saw them a couple times, and while their lead singer looked like a 12-year-old, they sure did rock out, more so than The Black Lips and The Arctic Monkeys, whom they opened for. Unfortunately, they broke up after only two records–boo. I was also quite into The Guest Bedroom, though I don’t think they’ve put a full album out yet.
Just now I’ve gotten into The Joy Formbidable, Sky Larkin, and Land of Talk.
If you know o some other awesome chick-rock bands, please do share, but don’t hate on them cuz they’re lady-folk. Plus, check out my digs @ last.fm.
